Understanding Carpal Tunnel

What is carpal tunnel syndrome?

Don't suffer any more hand, arm, wrist or carpal tunnel pain — get your life back! If you have chronic pain in your hand, wrist or arm, you might have carpal tunnel syndrome.

The carpal tunnel is a narrow, rigid passageway of ligament and bone at the base of your hand. Inside it are tendons and a nerve called the median nerve, which runs between your hand and your forearm.

If the tendons inside the tunnel become irritated, they thicken and swell, putting pressure on the median nerve. The result is pain, weakness or numbness in your hand and wrist, which can also radiate up your arm.

Causes

How did I get carpal tunnel syndrome?

Contrary to popular belief, repetitive movements of the hand and wrist do not cause carpal tunnel syndrome. (Repetitive movements cause other problems, such as tendonitis and bursitis.) Common causes are:

  • An injury to the wrist
  • Constant stress or strain on the wrist from overuse or an unnatural position
  • Repeated use of vibrating hand tools
  • Less often: rheumatoid arthritis, hypothyroidism, an overactive pituitary gland, fluid retention, a cyst or tumor in the carpal tunnel, or an unusually narrow carpal tunnel

Treatment

What can be done about carpal tunnel syndrome?

Our carpal tunnel treatments help patients recover rapidly. Two very effective techniques are the Graston technique and low-level laser therapy. These soft-tissue procedures focus on the muscles, ligaments and tendons of the forearm and can be extremely effective for managing carpal tunnel syndrome. We also analyze your posture and the ergonomics of your work area to see whether either is contributing to the problem.
