Understanding Elbow Pain

Tennis elbow, golfer's elbow — one kind of problem

Tennis elbow, golfer's elbow, little leaguer's elbow, medial or lateral epicondylitis: elbow pain goes by many names, but they all have similar causes. It's a form of tendonitis — an overuse injury.

Pain on the outside of the elbow, usually during or after intense use, is the first sign of tennis elbow. In some cases lifting or grasping objects becomes difficult, and some people have pain that radiates down the arm.

Because this injury is caused by overuse of the wrist extensors (the muscles that pull the hand up), rest is the first step. Overworked, tightened muscles tug constantly where they attach to the bone of the elbow, creating inflammation. That inflammation heals with some scar tissue, which makes the area easier to re-injure — and the cycle repeats.

LifeCare Chiropractic's Approach

Breaking the cycle with soft-tissue care

We take a strong soft-tissue approach, fully addressing the problems in the muscle groups and where they attach, to help you recover. Techniques like Graston address chronic problems caused by scar tissue build-up. Low-level laser can be added to further stimulate healing and calm inflammation, and braces can take stress off the elbow.

We are specialists in the Graston technique, which uses specially designed tools to break down scar tissue that restricts your movement and interferes with proper joint alignment. We'll also look at the posture and ergonomic issues that may be contributing to your pain.
