Vitamin D is Essential



HOW MUCH VITAMIN D DO TEENAGE GIRLS NEED?  There is no question that we are aiming way too low at the levels of Vitamin D that we are recommending.  In this particular study we find that 1,000 IU / day is not enough to affect bone in teenage girls that are Vitamin D deficient.  This tells me that they should be on at LEAST 4,000 IU / day to affect bone.  Unfortunately, it’s going to take several decades before everyone catches up with the research and starts recommending real levels of supplementation.  Incidentally, if your doctor has checked your levels and says they are ok, most labs’ normal range is from 30-100.  The experts, on the other hand, suggest 60-100 as optimal.
