LIPID PROBLEMS? WHAT’S BETTER–CARB OR CALORIE RESTRICTION? Most importantly, we need to recognize (most) lipid problems for what they are–prediabetes. This is frequently glossed over and the patient is put on statins for high cholesterol (which will, ironically, increase the risk of diabetes!). So, if high triglycerides are found and the issue is prediabetes, it would reason that carb restriction is going to be the most important dietary goal. And certainly the avoidance of all fast acting carbs / refined carbs. Scrap the carb counting–they’ve been teaching this in diabetes classes for decades and it’s not working–just focus on the ingredients label (better yet–buy stuff that doesn’t come with a label!). This study finds a 42% reduction in triglycerides in 2 weeks!! These were patients who also had liver problems as a result of being prediabetic.
