Well heck! There goes a whole entire 20 years of “sound” dietary advice! The problem in this country is that we like to take a macronutrient class (fats, proteins, carbs) and demonize one at a time. While this works great if you’re trying to sell a diet book focused on one or the other, it has never been the way our physiology works.
This particular study looks at a low fat diet over the course of 6 years and finds that, in non-diabetic women, the low fat diet had little positive effects. However, in diabetic women, there was a worsening of sugar control. Not a good thing.
It has never really been about the amount of macronutrients, but rather the makeup of that particular category. Commercially raised animal products as part of our proteins (vs wild game, grass fed organic or plant based proteins). Refined carbs as our carbohydrates (such as high fructose corn syrup in our “low fat” salad dressings, enriched wheat flour in everything we feed our kids). Animal based saturated fats, omega 6 fats and hydrogenated oils as our fats (vs omega 3 fats and plant based saturated fats).
The trend to lower fat in our diets has led to nothing but ruin for our health in the past 20 years. Instead, focus on the quality of those fats you take in vs the amount. Never pass up on that avacado just because it’s got fat…
