Dietary synbiotics reduce cancer risk factors in polypectomized and colon cancer patients
Now that I’m knee deep in a family member being treated for cancer, I can say that one of the more “renowned” cancer groups here in AZ is not anywhere I would again take a family member. There is absolutely no consideration for supporting normal physiology and helping reduce the side effects of treatment and increasing the effectiveness of treatment. It’s really, really difficult to watch from the sidelines.
In this study, we find positive effects with the combination of specific probiotics with short chain fatty acids (produced when bacteria digest soluble fiber in the gut) on colon cancer markers. This raises 2 questions–given that we know that this combination helps prevent colon cancer, why do we not use it for treatment and what does this say about our society’s overuse of antibiotics killing off the normal, protective flora?
