Colonic fermentation influences lower esophageal sphincter function in reflux disease

I must admit that I had to do a little additional research on this one not just because it was new news, but also because production of short chain fatty acids by colonic flora is actually a therapeutic goal for many conditions. Although the mechanism remains unknown, this association is a consistent finding. This would suggest care be taken for patients with reflux disease and use of soluble fibers such as fructooligosaccarhides (FOS).
