Infantile colic is an extremely difficult situation to deal with as a new parent. The reality is most likely that colic is multi-factorial and/or has separate categories. Growing pains, foods allergies (both direct and via nursing) and alterations in GI flora, and all these need to be addressed to fully impact this condition.
This article addresses the alterations in GI flora category, and finds rapid response in a whopping 95% of patients. Keep in mind that this is a pediatric journal and should be read by every practicing pediatrician. Maybe one day, if pediatricians ever actually realize the benefits of probiotics, we will see more deliberation before using antibiotics except when absolutely necessary.
