The Long-term Benefit of Surgery on Quality of Life in Patients With IBD

Okay...where do I start with this one?? Patients with inflammatory bowel disease can be managed very effectively using functional methods and natural approaches. But you have to have an inkling of how the GI tract functions before you can address IBD in this manner. Probiotics are one of the key tools used, and yet few gastroenterologists could adequately describe what they are, let alone the benefits to the GI tract. The idea that surgery can improve the quality of life in IBD patients sheds some light on just how ineffective the conventional treatments for IBD are. Cardiovascular Morbidity, Mortality w/ the Metabolic Syndrome

The metabolic syndrome, or Syndrome X, is a state of insulin resistance that leads to a wide variety of other signs and symptoms in the patient. It is well known that insulin levels play a large role in heart disease, and this study adds further weight to this idea. Any patient with or at risk for heart disease needs to adopt a lifestyle that pays attention to lowering insulin resistance and improving sensitivity. Pediatric Stimulant and SSRI Prescription Trends

I don't know about the authors of this study, but I find the more than doubling of the prescription rates for psychoactive drugs a little disturbing. Are our children really that sick and mentally altered? And, if they are, is it a problem during their infant development or their fetal development? And if the problem is not a problem that occurred during development, is it a current nutritional problem that can be fixed? Personally, I prefer the latter and believe that any child deserves a program of healthy living before going on psychoactive drugs that have no safety data for long term effects. Dietary fat intake and risk of type 2 diabetes in women

This article focuses on the impact of trans fatty acids on health. Trans fats are the fats that are not required to be on a nutrition label. I strongly recommend to all my patients that they avoid all hydrogenated oils because they contain high levels of trans fatty acids. Determinants of serum enterolactone concentration

Enterolactone is a lignan found in many whole grains, fruits and berries. This study looks at factors that would influence plasma levels of enterolactone. Enterolactone is a substance that has a wonderful effects on lowering risk of many hormone-related cancers. The authors lend much weight to the contribution that healthy GI flora play a large part in production of these lignans. Pathologic and physiologic interactions of bacteria w/ the GI epithelium

This is a little bit technical, but does provide much information in regards to how the normal flora and the wall of the GI tract interact. AJCN -- Abstracts: Lu and Walker 73 (6): 1124S http://www.ajcn.org/cgi/content/abstract/73/6/1124S
