Use of isotonic nebulised magnesium sulphate as an adjuvant to salbutamol in treatment of severe asthma

Anytime we can use a natural therapy to replace or add to current therapies I feel it is a good thing. In this study, magnesium used as an inhaler along with salbutomol was more effective at increasing the volume that patients experiencing a severe asthma attack.

Tooth loss, pancreatic cancer, and Helicobacter pylori

While the reasons for these relationships are not certain at this time, this is a perfect example of the interconnection that every part of our body has. Poor dental hygeine has also been associated with an increased risk of heart disease. It would not surprise me if a diet high in refined sugars may be a link.

Cholesterol-Lowering Effect of a Theaflavin-Enriched Green Tea Extract

There is no question that green tea is a part of a healthy lifestyle and its health benefits are quite numerous. When it comes to lowering cholesterol, an 11% drop is not exactly small, but, as with any natural approach, this would be combined with other lifestyle changes aimed at lowering cholesterol.

Adherence to a Mediterranean Diet and Survival in a Greek Population

I still strongly believe that a Mediterranean diet is one of the healthiest on the planet and research bears this out. It has been shown to be far more effective at lowering risk for as well as managing chronic conditions that the ADA or the AHA diets. Keep in mind that many national organizations such as the American Cancer Society, the American Diabetic Association and the American Heart Association are highly political, and their guidelines/recommendations are formed by a panel. These panels frequently contain members of organizations such as the Dairy Council and reps from some of the major processed food companies (Kellogg, Nabisco...). Thus, any recommendations given are "softened" by the business interests of these member organizations.

Effect of conjugate pneumococcal vaccine followed by polysaccharide pneumococcal vaccine on recurrent acute otitis media

I realize that ear infections in infants and toddlers are about as commonplace as dirty diapers, but I feel that we are managing this condition completely wrong. Instead of recommending lifestyle changes such as common allergen avoidance (dairy, corn, wheat, soy) we are trying hard to come up with a vaccine. Also, antibiotic use destroys normal flora, and this destruction appears to change the flora in a negative way and predispose to further infection. This is despite the fact that antibiotics have very little impact on the course of the infection.

Progression of Macular Degeneration: Association w/ BMI, Waist Circumference, and Waist-Hip Ratio

This is another article that demonstrates the interconnection between all body systems, and unless we begin to back up from specialties in medicine we will continue to miss the big picture.

Resveratrol: Candidate for Prostate Cancer Prevention

Resveratrol is a bioflavanoid found in peanuts and grapes that is believed to be the reason why wine is good for the heart. This study suggests that we can add prostate cancer protection to the cardioprotective list.

Mutations in BRCA1 and BRCA2 and predisposition to prostate cancer

Too many people do not make the association with a family member with either breast cancer or prostate cancer if they are of the opposite sex. However, there are numerous pathways by which these can be related. I was already aware that the way our bodies breakdown estrogen (identified in research as the 2/16 hydroxylation ratio) is a risk factor for both breast, endometrial and prostate cancer.

Sequence of Vaccinations Affects Child Survival

Vaccinations will always remain a very controversial topic. Unfortunately, many patients enter into this realm uneducated and unaware of the potential risks. If parents choose to vaccinate their children, it should only be after strong educational, unbiased information is given.
