***Avoiding milk is associated with a reduced risk of insulin resistance and the metabolic syndrome***
I hear frequently out in the community that the message of what's good for you constantly changes, so what's the point? While it seems that "experts" keep changing their minds, the research, over the decades, has consistently been against dairy. The research that is not against dairy shows only a weak protective effect at best. And, quite frequently, this research is funded by the dairy industry. A perfect example was a recent study showing that dairy helped study participants lose more weight over the course of 6 months. All dairy ads rapidly began to tout this amazing benefit of dairy. What they didn't mention was that the group with dairy lost an additional whopping--ah heck--I tried to find the exact number on PubMed but the first 20 or so articles showed no effect on weight. It was like, maybe 3 pound loss over 6 months..

***Milk, milk products and lactose intake and ovarian cancer risk***
I don't make this stuff up--I just find it. While this review does not show a strong association, it does show that increasing milk intake does increase your risk of ovarian cancer. As a society, we really need to re-evaluate our fascination w/ dairy. There are few dietary recommendations made that do not include dairy as a part of the equation. It's association w/ health is incredibly pervasive, despite only a weak benefit at best. At worst, increasing intake of dairy products contribute to chronic diseases.

***Professors speak out against advertising directly to consumers***
While anyone with any common sense can realize that the ability of drug companies to advertise directly to consumers is a problem, many clinicians are blissfully unaware of the affect this has on their practices. But, before anyone jumps to the idea of eliminating DTC advertising by the drug companies, consider the money involved--not just for the drug companies, but for the media companies that run their ads...

***Experts question wisdom of stockpiling oseltamivir***
Tamiflu is the latest prescription medicine that is supposed to fight off the flu. The problem is that the effects are weak at best. But, with the fear-mongering we are exposed to every "flu season," anything that might help with the flu can be a major money-maker. Many governments are looking to stockpile large amounts of Tamiflu to help fight off any "epidemic."

***Are US flu death figures more PR than science?***
And, for those of you who believes the fear-mongering, this article is a must read. In 2001, the CDC announced some 62,000 deaths attributed to influenza and pneumonia (which they conveniently lump together). Unfortunately, according to the CDC's own number, the actual confirmed deaths from the flu we a little less--18. How's that for hype? How about a little effort towards boosting immunity so those with the flu do not progress to something more severe? Avoiding refined carbs, exercise, more vitamin C, D and A, etc... would give us a heck of alot more bang for our buck than flu shots.

***Treatment of Autoimmune Neuroinflammation with a Synthetic Tryptophan Metabolite***
While the biochemistry on this one may be a little deep, this mouse study found that a derivative of tryptophan (not sure why they would need to use a derivative...) was found to shift the immune balance away from autoimmunity which could be a major benefit in many conditions such as multiple sclerosis. Remember that all tryptophan was taken off the market in 1988 due to a contaminent from one single source. Still difficult to find (compare to Tylenol, which was back on the market in days) but 5-HTP is common and gets converted to tryptophan.

***Nutrition and Depression: Implications for Improving Mental Health Among Childbearing-Aged Women***
This is one area that is vehemently ignored by mental health professionals I have come across. They are not willing to entertain the idea that depression may have a physiological cause that could be treated or at least reduced, with proper attention to diet and supplementation. There have been numerous studies linking improved depression and fish oil as well as certain B vitamins. Given their safety, and the major side effects of anti-depressant medications, this is an aspect that should absolutely be addressed in all mental health patients.

***Significant Spinal Injury Resulting From Low-Level Accelerations: A Case Series of Roller Coaster Injuries***
Obviously, being a chiropractor, this article hits home with me. We hear it over and over again, that patients that were in minor accidents couldn't have been injured. This just isn't true and the insurance companies know it because THEY are the ones that ran the studies to show injuries do occur at low speeds!! How's that for hypocritical? The thing to look at is not only the acceleration/deceleration, but how fast that occurs. Sitting down into a chair may involve to same decelaration, but it occurs over a much longer period of time than a motor vehicle accident or a roller coaster.

***Prescription of teratogenic medications in United States ambulatory practices***
I know I've been beating up on traditional medical practices in this issue, but I'm just reviewing them as they come in. This review founds that MILLIONS of women get drugs during pregnancy that could potentially lead to birth defects. As far as I'm concerned, any medication use during pregnancy should be avoided unless absolutely, positively necessary. Even when a drug is deemed safe, this was based on birth outcomes--there are few long term studies every done on how a drug given during pregnancy may effect long term health or development.

***Update: West Nile Virus Activity --- United States, 2005***
It's a wonder we don't all lock ourselves in our houses, seal up every little crack, and cower in the corner for fear of contracting ebola, west nile, infuenza, necretizing fascitis or some other "disease of the day" condiiton. The fear given to the spread of West Nile was considerable, and, in truth, people have died from West Nile. But 83? How much effort and money was spent towards "educating" people about West Nile? Compare that to the amount of money spent on educating the public about refined carbs, which can lead to insulin resistance and kills hundreds of thousands per year. In case you can't find any data on how much money is spent on refined carbs, I'm pretty sure it's not much more that $10 collectively across the US.
