***A Prospective Study of Anemia Status, Hemoglobin Concentration, and Mortality in an Elderly Cohort***
Iron deficiency results in decreased oxygen delivery to tissues. Decreased oxygen leads to increased oxidative stress (seems a little paradoxical, huh?) which is a player in most chronic diseases. So it should come as no surprise that anemia was a risk factor for mortality. Also, since iron, in unbound forms, is a pro-oxidant, too much also leads to the same problem.

***Importance of tocopherols beyond tocopherol: evidence from animal and human studies***
It's nice to see a review illuminating the importance of a balance of tocopherols. Remember that what we normally consider as vitamin E is really alpha tocopherol, and that there are at least four known tocopherols, all of which have interactions between one another to generate health. Mother nature provided a nice blend of these tocopherols in natural oils. This is yet another big difference between the cheap multivitamins and the higher quality ones--most higher quality vitamins contain mixed tocopherols.

***Developmental Origins of Osteoporotic Fracture: the Role of Maternal Vitamin D Insufficiency***
Not to beat a dead horse, but the intrauterine time period is an incredible time of pre-programming the new life for health or chronic disease. So, given both the fear of sunlight and the poor quality of most prenatals which certainly will not contain enough Vit D, we are once again pre-programming an entire generation of patients with chronic diseases. Oh wait!! How could I forget the 3-a-day dairy program? That would provide 1200 IU of Vit D, right? Too bad the body is probably primed more for Vit D levels > 10,000 IU...

***Cognitive and physiological effects of Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid supplementation in healthy subjects***
While we have seen studies like this before with wonderful benefits of omega-3 supplementation, the question is, how many of these conditions would be present in the first place if there was enough omega 3 fatty acids in our diets in the first place. This study found increased vigour, reduced anger, anxiety and depression with higher levels of omega 3s. So, quite frankly, a good quality EFA supplement should be on the shelf of every psychiatrist's office right alongside those other "beneficial" compounds that modify that delicate balance of neurotransmitters within the brain that have never been adequately studied and regardless seem to have nominal benefits at best...

***Fast foods - are they a risk factor for asthma?***
While this may come as a shock to some, eating fast food is generally not good for our health. This has been a public service reminder to avoid fast food...

***Randomized Trials Stopped Early for Benefit***
There are times when researchers feel that the benefits for a product or drug they are testing are showing strong enough during earlier phases of research for the researchers to cancel the trial and proclaim the drug or procedure a success. These types of releases typically get much fanfare. So this study looked at this phenomena and found that, in many cases, the decision to end a trial early was "jumping the gun" and when the data is looked at more closely, the "wonderful results" seen in the trial might not hold up too well. Yet another marketing ploy for the drug companies. Not only that, but think how much money they save by not completing the clinical trials.

***Effect of a Low-Allergen Maternal Diet on Colic Among Breastfed Infants***
Many would not think that the foods a nursing mother takes in would have a large impact on certain conditions her infant may be experiencing, but that's not the case at all. Even the mercury from her fillings can show up in breast milk. This reinforces that a nursing mother needs to be fully aware of the quality and type of foods she is eating. What was interesting, however, was that, although the reduction in distress in the infant was clearly demonstrated, the moms did not note much of a difference.

***Effectiveness of Iron Supplementation in a Young Child With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder***
While this is only one case study, it does suggest that there are nutritional factors that may play a role in the manifestation of ADD/ADHD. Big surprise there, huh? So then I guess the next question would be what could the iron be doing? Most likely it will allow increased oxygen carrying capacity of the blood, resulting in tissues like the brain, getting more oxygen. More oxygen will mean reduced oxidative stress and better neuronal function.

***Prevalence of Impaired Fasting Glucose and Its Relationship With Cardiovascular Disease Risk Factors in US Adolescents***
Are you sitting down? Get ready for the onslaught. The prevalence of impaired fasting glucose (a harbinger of insulin resistance and risk of diabetes) in US adolescents was 7%. If that child was overweight the numbers were an even scarier 17.8%. Does anyone really grasp the concept of what this will do to our healthcare system? If we do not get a handle on the demon we know as insulin resistance and do it quick, there will be no healthcare system that can support the financial weight of dealing with all these chronic diseases.

***Pervasive social deficits, but normal parturition, in oxytocin receptor-deficient mice***
Understanding that this is a mouse study, there is an important take home message. The induction of labor with pitocin here in the US is very high. Pitocin mimics the action of oxytocin. While many may view oxytocin as the hormone that initiates and promotes labor, it also plays a large role in social behaviors. There have been numberous studies linking pitocin use and ADD/ADHD behaviors. This study adds further support to the proposed mechanism through which this can occur.
