***Melatonin in walnuts: Influence on levels of melatonin and total antioxidant capacity of blood***
Okay, so I was a little surprised to hear that melatonin is found in walnuts. I guess I just always viewed it as one of those mammal-only substances. I guess this means we can add walnuts to the list of compounds that may have an ability to sedate and/or help people sleep when taken late at night.

***Effect of tryptophan depletion on symptoms of motion sickness in migraineurs***
It's just been a month for revelations for me. Never considered the serotonin pathway as playing a role in motion sickness, but this study found that migraine patients depleted of tryptophan (serotonin's precursor) experienced worse dizziness and nausea. From a natural standpoint, foods like sunflower seeds and bananas are a good source of tryptophan that can make it across the blood brain barrier w/o much competition. Supplemental L-tryptophan or 5 -HTP would have similar effects.

***Increases in testicular cancer may be linked to the rise in maternal body weight***
I've said it before and this is yet another sad example of what we can expect as we have unhealthy mothers given birth to unhealthy children and starting them off with unhealthy lifestyles. Expect to see several generations of reducitons in life expectancies unless we, as a society, get on the ball and truly start educating people about prevention and health.

***High-sensitive C-reactive protein, tumor necrosis factor, and cardiovascular risk factors before and after weight loss in obese children***
None of this information should come as a big surprise, but it can serve as a reminder of how devasting obesity is to our systems. Begin the process of increased inflammation and elevated insulin in children, and I really do not want to think of the long term ramifications of these alterations. These children will start out their life with drastically increased risk of chronic diseases. And, while this may sound harsh, the blame falls largely on the shoulders of the parents I think this is something we have been afraid to admit, but it is truly. The dietary habits children pick up is a direct reflection of parental lifestyles.

***Effect of rosuvastatin on insulin sensitivity in patients with familial combined hyperlipidaemia***
Go ahead. I know you're on the edge of your seats. Does this statin drug positively affect one of the most devasting physiological imbalances of our time in addition to lowering cholesterol levels which are really secondary to the hyperinsulinemia that is chipping away at the very foundation of a patient's health? Read the article. Better yet, I'll save you the time....NO...

***Effect of a Short-term Diet and Exercise Intervention on Serum Insulin, Lipids, Oxidative Stress, Inflammation, and Adhesion Molecules in Children***
I'm not quite sure which is more surprising--the fact that these chldren noted pretty drastic improvements in health markers within TWO WEEKS, or the fact that these kids needed this type of intervetion at all. So many times, I hear parents mention that they are not going to "deprive" their children of a "normal" childhood by not given them junk like Twinkies and Doritos. Can't quite begin to describe how demented this position is. And if their kid wanted to start smoking?????

***Acute Vitamin D Intoxication in a Child***
See!! These vitamin thingees are dangerous and should be made prescription only!! Of course, they better not point to this case, because it took 2.4 MILLION IUs of vitamin D for the reaction, and all symptoms were reversible. Talk about a safety widow. The brand of vitamin D drops that I use has 2,000 IU per drop. Maybe 50-100 drops per bottle. So someone would have to take minimum 14 bottles within 4 days. And the stuff doesn't taste the best, either...

***Potential markers of oxidative stress in stroke***
This is such an important concept to get a grip on. Sure, we can homogenized our patient's brains in a blender and directly measure markers of oxidative stress, but patients rarely benefit from this approach. It does appear from several studies that malondialdehyde (MDA) is turning out to be a good marker. This is nice, because there are already several cheap and easy urine tests to determine qualitatively MDA levels. Once we get a complete picture of how effective these markers for oxidative stress are in the nervous system, we can begin to take a more aggressive stance on targeted antioxidant therapies to lower risk/progression of neurodegenerative disorders and stroke.

***Insulin neuroprotection against oxidative stress in cortical neurons Involvement of uric acid and glutathione antioxidant defenses***
Lest you think that Mother Nature created a compound like insulin and all it does is nasty things (aka Metabolic Syndrome), remember that Mother Nature does everything with a purpose. Insulin is no different. While high levels are unquestionably horrendous to our long term health, their is much evidence supporting insulin in protecting patients in the midst of a heart attack and now, with potentially lowering oxidative stress in neurodegenerative disorders. Balance is the key word.

***A Systematic Review of the Role of Hydrolyzed Infant Formulas in Allergy Prevention***
Unquestionably, breast milk is the first choice. Period. However, there are instances where breast feeding is just not possible. The issue here is that, no matter what type of formula you throw at a developing infant's delicate GI tract, the chance for sensitivities to develop is increased. The use of enzymatically pre digested formulas have less intact proteins for the immune system around the GI tract to react to. While these formulas are more expensive, in many cases the future savings on meds and copays helps balance this out.
