***Distinctive postprandial modulation of ß cell function and insulin sensitivity by dietary fats***
Preserving and improving beta cell function is arguably one of the more important things we can focus on, diabetic or not. As beta cell function drops, the likelihood of diabetes and insulin dependent diabetes, goes up. So anything we can do to improve beta cell function is a goal. In this particular study, the authors determined that, as a patient moved from a poor quality fat diet (more saturated) to a more monounsaturated diet, their beta cell function improved. Combine this with exercise, no refined carbs and a high phytonutrient diet and our body's handling of glucose can only improve.

***Predicting relapse in Crohn's disease: a biopsychosocial model***
As with any disease, our stress levels and ability to cope with what life sends our way are integral in how well we perform. This study further confirms this strong association in Crohns disease, finding that those best able to deal with life's stress had a much lower likelihood of remission. Interestingly, our perceived locus of health control (the idea that our health outcomes are under our own control) plays a large role in many disease states as well. However, mainstream medicine fosters a dependency--frequently blaming genetics or just bad luck in a patient's disease state. With no responsibility for getting ill, there is no responsibility for getting well. Since it's not the patients responsibility, the locus of control lies with medicine and NOT the patient--leading to increased disease states. Kind of a viscous circle, huh?

***Domestic and Farm-Animal Exposures and Risk of Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma***
Some pretty surprising results in this study. I've always considered the lymphomas and leukemias some of the harder cancers to strongly prevent (as opposed to solid tumors like breast, colon, prostate, pancreatic), but this study finds some very strong protective effects of dog and cat ownership (up to 42% reduced risk). As an owner of 4 dogs, I have my opinions on this one. This protective effect may be from immune system modulation that we know occurs with pet exposure (the hygiene hypothesis) or it may be purely stress reduction from close animal contact. Either way, this review strongly supports the concept of dog and cat ownership as a protection against lymphoma.

***Serum Calcium and Incident and Fatal Prostate Cancer in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey***
Had to share this...higher serum calcium leads to 2.68 OR for fatal prostate cancer. Kind of brings into question the idea of "dairy it does a body good" and taking calcium for bone health, huh? I first heard it proposed in Dr. Colin Campbell's the China Study that higher serum calcium leads to lower activation of 25 OH Vit D to calcitriol. Less calcitriol means we open up to risks of chronic diseases associated w/ low Vit D status. All the research I've seen really seems to point to the validity of this process. Because of this I've become increasingly wary of calcium supplementation. Instead, maintain good Vit D levels coupled with high quality diet--let the GI tract sort out how much calcium it wants to absorb...

***Intake from water from foods but not beverages, is related to lower body mass index and waist circumference in humans***
I have often wondered how some "health" recommendations get so blown out of proportion and become so widely accepted despite no evidence to support them, or worse--evidence to the contrary. Female HRT, dairy intake, etc...). The near ubiquitous recommendation of 8-10 glasses of water per day falls into this category, matched with the recommendation to increase water intake to maintain satiety during dieting. Consider this--there are no published recommendations to support this level of water intake, and yet, when one considers BPA exposure from plastic bottles and the sometimes chemical laden, low quality bottle water, these recommendations may very well prove harmful. This article puts another nail in this coffin, finding that water content of foods helps to improve body composition, but water consumed separately does not have any effect.

***Association of Urinary Bisphenol A Concentration With Medical Disorders and Laboratory Abnormalities in Adults***
Interestingly, despite evidence over the years, the EPA's stance on BPA is that it is safe at levels of normal exposure. You can even find a wonderful website highlighting the joy and benefit that BPA brings to our lives that is funded by the chemical companies that manufacture plastics containing BPA. Despite this rosy picture, the research disagrees, including this current study in a very prestigious journal finding an increase in CVD, diabetes and elevated liver enzymes (most likely linked to the prediabetic state) in those with the highest exposure to BPA based on urine levels. Now does this sound safe, and safe enough to be used in products our pregnant moms, infants and toddlers are exposed to?

***Prenatal imprinting of postnatal specific appetites and feeding behavior***
This phenomena comes up again and again and again and again in the medical literature. There is no longer any doubt that in-utero exposure to a variety of chemicals, situations and physiological states have an influence on the newborn both immediately and decades in the future. This is NOT being communicated to women of childbearing age nor to pregnant women at the level of concern that it needs to be. Sure, pregnant women should not be smoking, but exposure to BPA and other chemicals, rapid weight gain, stress, gestational diabetes, high refined carbs, high saturated fats, low omega 3 fatty acids and low phytonutrient intake ALL need to be on the plan for every women even considering becoming pregnant. And how does this all impact the woman who's body is not ready for pregnancy (i.e. infertility), but is forced into it anyway (infertility treatment)?

***Decreased Fetal Size Is Associated With beta-Cell Hyperfunction in Early Life and Failure With Age***
Again, just to support the above statement, we see a study that suggest that the fetus in the womb born small for gestational age will compensate by overworking the beta cells of the pancreas. The problem with this is that, later in life, these beta cells finally give out, leading to diabetes.

***Polyamine Metabolism and Transforming Growth Factor-beta Signaling Are Affected in Caco-2 Cells by Differentially Cooked Broccoli Extracts***
Ok...don't let the title put you to sleep...you need to follow along here because there are some very important concepts to be learned. First, there is always concern that microwaving will destroy much of the water soluble healthy compounds in foods. This study was interesting in that it microwaved broccoli for 0, 1 and 4 minutes and looked at how many genes were activated in a colon cancer cell model. The 1 min sample was almost 3 times more effective than the un-microwaved sample. Next, it was determined that the 4 min sample had all the sulfurophane destroyed, and yet was able to induce positive changes in the toxin metabolism of the cells it was exposed to. I'm not saying that we should all feel free to nuke our broccoli until it's ash in the tray of the microwave, but in today's environment where convenience is king, maybe even microwaving a healthy entree (i.e. Kashi, Amy's) can have significant health benefits.

***Association between paracetamol use in infancy and childhood, and risk of asthma, rhinoconjunctivitis, and eczema in children aged 6-7 years***
In today's society, we have become so conditioned to accept chemical use as safe and only beneficial. The commercials would have us believe that only caring and loving parents with the utmost of concern for their child's health would use these compounds. And yet we have seen studies of paracetamol (Tylenol) use in pregnancy, adults and children contribute greatly to the asthma burden in society. So were is the outrage and the public outcry over the fact that these compounds are making our children sick?
