***High Prevalence of Vitamin D Insufficiency in Black and White Pregnant Women Residing in the Northern United States and Their Neonates*** This is a large conference coming up that is sponsored by the NIH coming up in September of this year. It's only taken several years for the government to realize we've got a massive problem. This study found pregnant women in the Pittsburgh area had very high rates of too little Vit D in their blood. The problem was amplified in their neonates. Given how incredibly important Vit D is to just about everything, this presents a major public health problem. Of course, the real problem here is that we have stuck our proverbial foot in our mouth with sunlight exposure, scaring everyone into wearing SPF 90 to walk to the car, producing very high rates of Vit D deficiencies in many populations. The bottom line is that our ancestors got heavy amounts of sunshine and our bodies were designed to deal with higher levels of Vit D in our blood. Read More
***Effect of Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors on the Risk of Fracture*** What's the worst possible combination for bone health? Poor bone mineral density coupled with an increased risk of falling. Now guess what? You can get all this in one easy pill!! Even more fearful, this study was done on elderly subjects. What will happen to the bones of teens put on antidepressants for years? We probably won't have specifics for decades. On the contrary, fish oils, exercise and vitamin D are all well known to help fight off depression as well as build bone mass. This seems like an easy decision to me. Read More
***Accelerated Mitochondrial Adenosine Diphosphate/Adenosine Triphosphate Transport Improves Hypertension-Induced Heart Disease*** I've made it quite clear that I believe mitochondrial dysfunction / oxidative stress is the root of all evil when it comes to chronic disease. So it is with great disappointment that I bring another article that supports this concept. Basically, researchers found in a rat study that supporting the ability of the mitochondria to produce energy for a heart cell prevented the inevitable enlargement of the left ventricle. Thus, anything that will support mitochondrial function, such as a diet high in phytonutrients / redox potential, calorie restriction w/o nutrient restriction, exercise or targeted supplementation with antioxidants is likely to protect the heart. As an added bonus, all these interventions will also lower any offending high blood pressure. Read More
***Multislice Computed Tomography in an Asymptomatic High-Risk Population*** As this technology has advanced, it has consistently proven itself to be an effect method of screening patients already at some degree of risk for CVD. Screening for everyone would be very expensive without strong benefits. The problem is that this technology is not being used effectively. Many patients still undergo "screening" coronary catheterization and this procedure is NOT without significant risks. Anyone who is at risk for CVD and is told by their cardiologist that they need the surgical procedure should strongly consider the CT scan first. Read More
***Circadian tempo: A paradigm for genome stability?*** Wow!! What a concept. Our body's ability to repair damaged DNA does not occur evenly throughout the day, but seems to be at its peak at the time of day when the DNA is most likely to be exposed to higher levels of DNA damage. So, if this holds true, then what about patients that have problems sleeping, work night shifts or are stressed? Might this be another mechanism by which these conditions lead to cancer? Read More
***Clomiphene, Metformin, or Both for Infertility in the Polycystic Ovary Syndrome*** Jese o' Pete--How about NEITHER!! PCOS is a lifestyle condition that needs to be managed from a lifestyle standpoint. You force ovulation on a body that is saying it doesn't want to get pregnant and you grow a fetus in an unhealthy system and then mom raises that child in the same poor lifestyle she had. This is a deadly combination as it pertains to chronic disease. Although we are seeing the onset of chronic disease in younger and younger patients each generation, I firmly believe that we have only seen the tip of the iceberg as it relates to chronic disease. ***Parental Determinants of Neonatal Body Composition*** We really need to get on the ball with education both women of childbearing age as well as pregnant women how much what they do during and BEFORE pregnancy affects the health of their child in infancy and well into their adult life. While I wouldn't dare say this to a pregnant woman's face, once they are pregnant (or even thinking about becoming pregnant) it is no longer about YOU. It is about that little developing organism within you and knowing that everything you do to yourself will have an impact on the rest of their lives. That a VERY heavy responsibility. Read More
***Comparison of Plasma Insulin Levels after a Mixed-Meal Challenge in Children with and without Intrauterine Exposure to Diabetes*** Did I mention that what a pregnant woman does to her body is important to her developing baby? In case you aren't convinced, this study found an abnormal insulin response in children born to mothers who had diabetes diagnosed before pregnancy as early as NINE YEARS OLD!! These children are unquestionably starting their early life behind the eight ball health wise. Read More
***Alternate day calorie restriction improves clinical findings and reduces markers of oxidative stress and inflammation in overweight adults with moderate asthma*** The concept of calorie restriction without nutrient restriction really intrigues me. While I have not used it clinically, the research supporting this type of approach is rapidly growing, and almost everything I've read is positive. The problem with calorie restriction is that most patients would not be willing to partake in this as a lifestyle choice. The drug companies are trying to find out how to mimic it with a pharmaceutical compound and the researchers are trying to figure out how to make a CR approach more appealing to the masses. The idea of restricting calories every other day is definitely do-able. Initial research suggests that calorie restriction increases both the efficiency and number of mitochondria. Basically, the body becomes very effective in utilizing all calories that come into the body and does this by making more and "stronger" mitochondria. In this particular study, researchers found that alternate day CR in 10 obese patients with asthma had positive effects as soon as 2 weeks. Pretty strong findings for such a safe approach. Read More
***Dietary synbiotics reduce cancer risk factors in polypectomized and colon cancer patients*** Now that I'm knee deep in a family member being treated for cancer, I can say that one of the more "renowned" cancer groups here in AZ is not anywhere I would again take a family member. There is absolutely no consideration for supporting normal physiology and helping reduce the side effects of treatment and increasing the effectiveness of treatment. It's really, really difficult to watch from the sidelines. In this study, we find positive effects with the combination of specific probiotics with short chain fatty acids (produced when bacteria digest soluble fiber in the gut) on colon cancer markers. This raises 2 questions--given that we know that this combination helps prevent colon cancer, why do we not use it for treatment and what does this say about our society's overuse of antibiotics killing off the normal, protective flora?
