***Nontraditional atherosclerotic risk factors and extent of coronary atherosclerosis in patients with combined impaired fasting glucose and impaired glucose tolerance*** There are many clinical trials attempting to find that one drug that, when given at high dosages, can reverse or stop plaquing of the arteries. Of course, all this money spent is in the face of lifestyle changes and natural compounds that already to what the drug companies are trying to mimic. This study found a relationship between the amount of plaquing in the coronary arteries and several "non-traditional" risk factors. So often physicians view coronary heart disease risk with blinders on -- check cholesterol, blood pressure, family history, etc... But these risk factors only show a small part of what's going on as far as risk of CHD in the patient. This study found that insulin resistance was a major contributor to plaquing. No big surprise, of course, given how pro-inflammatory insulin resistance is. Read More
***Calorie restriction up-regulates the plasma membrane redox system in brain cells and suppresses oxidative stress during aging*** Calorie restriction has a definite, positive effect on the functioning of mitochondria. This study ads to our understanding, and finds that CR also helps to increase the efficiency of the enzymes in the cell well of neurons that recycle antioxidants such as CoQ10 and Vit E. CR or alternate day CR needs to be a tool in the treatment box of neurodegenerative disorders such as epilepsy, Alzheimer's and Parkinsons. Read More
***Lactobacillus reuteri (American Type Culture Collection Strain 55730) Versus Simethicone in the Treatment of Infantile Colic*** Infantile colic is an extremely difficult situation to deal with as a new parent. The reality is most likely that colic is multi-factorial and/or has separate categories. Growing pains, foods allergies (both direct and via nursing) and alterations in GI flora, and all these need to be addressed to fully impact this condition. This article addresses the alterations in GI flora category, and finds rapid response in a whopping 95% of patients. Keep in mind that this is a pediatric journal and should be read by every practicing pediatrician. Maybe one day, if pediatricians ever actually realize the benefits of probiotics, we will see more deliberation before using antibiotics except when absolutely necessary. Read More
***Environmental exposure to bacteria and viruses may provide oncolytic protection against cancers, and declining exposure to infections may contribute to a rising incidence of cancer*** Medical Hypothesis is one of my favorite journals; many of its articles are written by very foresighted people. This author suggests that recurrent exposure to bacteria and viruses over our lifetimes leads to constant surveillance by the immune system for these agents. Since various infectious agents are well known to contribute to cancer (using the recent hype over the HPV vaccine for cervical cancer as an example), keeping our immune system vigilant in fighting off these agents could ward off cancer as well. ***Dietary fatty acid intakes and the risk of ovulatory infertility*** Concerns of infertility, both male and female, are definitely becoming more commonplace. There is obviously a reason for this reduction in fertility; Mother Nature would not shut down the "reason to be" unless there was a darn good reason. Enter mainstream medicine, seemingly oblivious to Mother Nature's plan, who proceeds to force fertility on a body that's not ready for it. I remember a patient that was excited about seeing a fertility "specialist" a year or so ago. She had done her research and she felt he was going to find out WHY she was not getting pregnant. He ran a single serum hormone test (salivary profile taken over a month is arguably one of the best ways to evaluate what the hormones are doing) and determined that she needed hormone shots!! Some "specialist"!!! No talk about celiac disease, thyroid problems, diet, heavy metal exposure... I guess that the sad part is that this is ALL I've ever heard about "specialists." The use of assisted reproductive technologies is damaging the health of our society, increasing the rate of preterm babies and babies born with higher lifetime chances of developing diabetes, heart disease and obesity. ***Blood Omega-3 and Trans Fatty Acids in Middle-Aged Acute Coronary Syndrome Patients*** The authors found much higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids in the blood of patients who did not have acute coronary syndrome compared to patients w/ ACS. Given the sheer volume of research, this really should not surprise anyone. But I will take this time to vent on the felony-like behavior of Reliant Pharmaceuticals. They market Omacor (which recently changed names to Lovaza to protect the guilty..). It is a standard omega-3 fatty acid product. At best equal to, and most likely inferior to, a number of other omega-3 fatty acid supplements. The difference? Your friendly neighborhood pharmacy charges your insurance anywhere from $115 to $250 for a month's supply of Omacor. Compare that to around $25 for a similar product. This should be a FELONY. Where is the outrage on this? They certainly don't need a thousand fold markup for R & D--they didn't do ANY!! Read More
***CoQ10 Deficiency and Response to Supplementation in Pediatric and Adolescent Migraine*** Given that we have shifted our thinking of the cause of migraines to a mitochondrial dysfunction / oxidative stress model, the results of this study should come as no surprise. I still find it very bothersome, though, that we have so many patients being treated for migraines under a "pain control only" model without any thought to fixing the underlying mechanism. The problem here is that oxidative stress leads to so many other chronic diseases that the patient and doctor just missed an opportunity to change the health trajectory away from one of chronic disease. ***Mechanisms underlying the resistance to diet-induced obesity in germ-free mice*** Many researchers consider the bacteria in our gut as another organ system given the magnitude of effects these bacteria have on our systems as a whole. Detoxification, protection, conversion of compounds to active forms, formation of Vit B12, the list is endless. This article brings to light the concept that the bacteria in our gut may also play a role in weight balance, both for good and for bad. Maybe some day in the future the focus on antibiotic overuse will not be on antibiotic resistance, but rather how destroying the bacteria that are supposed to be there wreaks havoc on our balance. ***T-helper type 1 cytokine release is enhanced by in vitro zinc supplementation due to increased natural killer cells *** Researchers concluded that zinc may have the ability to help our immune system fight off cancer and viral infections. While I don't often recommend individual zinc supplementation, this research strongly supports the concept of using a good quality multivitamin. If we pieced out all the vitamins and minerals that we should be taking and took them all separately, most patients would find themselves noncompliant and not reaping the benefits. However, a good quality multi fills in so many gaps and helps in so many individual ways that there really is no reason why everyone should not be taking a good quality multi. Read More
***S-Adenosyl-L-Methionine Increases Skeletal Muscle Mitochondrial DNA Density and Whole Body Insulin Sensitivity*** Wow!! While I somewhat remember that the methylation pathway and SAMe feed into glutathione (an essential component of one of the body's most potent detoxifying ezymes and antioxidant enzymes), I can honestly say using methylators like SAMe, B12 or betaine had not come to mind. Keep in mind this is a mouse study, however, anything that can increase the efficiency of mitochondria is a keeper in my book! Read More
