***Effect of Introduction of the Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine on Drug-Resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae***
I realize that there are bacteria out there that cause lots of nasty stuff in suseptable persons. But, for some reason, today's society is hell bent on getting rid of these infections that create problems, mostly through the use of vaccination. The problem is that Mother Nature is not inclined to be happy about it, so while we eradicate some infectious bug, another pops up right behind it (AIDS, anyone?). This article clearly demonstrates this. While the pneumococcal vaccine has reduced the number of infections that it is made for, a subgroup of this same bacteria is increasing. I envision it as one large "whack a mole" game...
***Vitamin D supplementation improves cytokine profiles in patients with congestive heart failure***
This study found that Vit D was able to lower the levels of a compound called IL-10. While IL-10 is not the queen of all inflammatory mediators, it is very high up on the hierarchy. This means that IL-10 turns on a bunch of other enzymes involved in inflammation. So, lower levels of IL-10 equals less inflammation. While this study was done on congestive heart failure patients, it has ramifications for every other type of autoimmune disease as well. Also, the levels used, 50 micrograms (about 2,000 IU), is definitely a good dosage.
***Pretreatment with Lactobacillus- and Bifidobacterium-containing yogurt can improve the efficacy of quadruple therapy in eradicating residual Helicobacter pylori infection after failed triple therapy***
I've said it before, and I'll ramble about it again--I firmly believe that H. pylori is an opportunistic infection that gets a foothold when the lifestyle of the patient is less than optimal. There is also quite a bit of evidence suggesting the probiotics may lower the number and damage done by H. pylori. I would also infer from this that antibiotic use may actually be a risk factor for development of H. pylori infection. Quite a turnaround from current thinking....
***Suppression of Helicobacter pylori-induced interleukin-8 production in vitro and within the gastric mucosa by a live Lactobacillus strain***
Are we seeing a pattern here? And the bigger question is...is the H. pylori "epidemic" a result of antibiotic use in the first place? If probiotic bacteria are so effective at helping to cure H. pylori infection, did eradication of our friendly bacteria in the first place set the stage for the H. pylori infection later? The answer to this question seems pretty clear based on the evidence. What a racket these pharmaceutical companies have going, huh?
***Activation of Oxidative Stress by Acute Glucose Fluctuations Compared With Sustained Chronic Hyperglycemia in Patients With Type 2 Diabetes***
It frustrates me that most diabetics do not get the real information that they need. I still have patients that have gone through several diabetes "education" classes and have no idea what a refined carb is. Quite frankly, that is unacceptable. Enough rambling... This article finds that frequent glucose fluctuations may actually cause more damage to the body than focusing on a lower HbA1C measurement. I can tell you that medication CANNOT effectively achieve this. Only diet and exercise can have the stabilizing effect that is needed for strong glucose control.
***Phenotypic changes in colonocytes following acute stress or activation of mast cells in mice: implications for delayed epithelial barrier dysfunction***
While this is a mouse study, the implications confirm what we already know--stress has major negative physiological effects. This study found that there was an increase in the permeability of the GI tract under stress. This would create a condition called "leaky gut" where molecules and proteins are getting absorbed into the body that were never supposed to make it in. Since blood flows directly from the GI tract to the liver, this then overburdens the liver and sets up a whole other set of issues. Bottom line? Stress kills. Just in more ways then we used to think... And it's not a pretty death.
***Conjugated linoleic acid inhibits osteoclast differentiation***
We have unquestionably moved from the "milk it does a body good" dogma of bone health to one of inflammation driven bone loss. Given that unhealthy lifestyles lead to inflammation, it is no big surprise that osteoporosis is becoming a larger and larger issue in Western cultures. It has less to do with dairy and calcium intake (and given that animal proteins like dairy are more inflammatory...) and more to do with lowering oxidative stress and inflammation. This is one of the reasons why we have seen fish oils help with bone--it has no direct effect on bone, rather, it lowers inflammation and stops the loss of bone.
***Elevated C-reactive protein in Native Canadian children: an ominous early complication of childhood obesity***
I hate to be the guy on the soapbox chanting "The end is near" to everyone who walks by, but there will soon be a serious price to pay for the poor lifestyles our children are living. I personally feel that, with every generation, we see the chronic disease onset earlier and earlier. This particular studies finds that, in Native American children, a large percentage of children studied had risk factors for diabetes and CVD that would be a bad sign in adults. In children it is a death sentence for early mortality. These kids will not live to see 60. Period. Until we wake up and take an aggressive stance, we won't see this trend reverse anytime soon.
***Vitamin D Status in Relation to One-Year Risk of Recurrent Falling in Older Men and Women***
While I have not seen any guesses as to the mechanism of how this occurs, the findings in this study are staggerring. Low levels of Vit D led to almost 5 times the risk of falling. Five times. I firmly believe that our current public health stance that produces fear mongering sunlight exposure is one of the more damaging things that is occurring to our health. Some studies find that Vit D deficiency is as high as 75% of the population. Given the wide range of beneficial effects of Vit D, these findings should be viewed as a public health alarm, gravely more dangerous to our health than not getting our flu shot or making sure you don't miss that colonoscopy. So why is does this remain a secret? There may be some serious face lost if we have to reverse our national recommendations for sun exposure.
***Prepregnancy body mass index and dietary intake in the first trimester of pregnancy***
So, this study finds that, the heavier a woman is when she gets pregnant, the more likely she is to underreport the amount of calories she is taking in, and the more likely she is to not be taking in enough folic acid. More and more studies are finding that health during prepregnancy and pregnancy is a major predictor of the long term health of the child all the way into adulthood. We are preprogramming this infant's genes before they are even born!! Leaves them with little chance to avoid chronic diseases as they get older.
