***Cortisol, the Cortisol-Dehydroepiandrosterone Ratio, and Pro-Inflammatory Cytokines in Patients with Current Major Depressive Disorder Comorbid with Borderline Personality Disorder***
I can tell you that few in today's society view any type of psychological disorder as having a physiological basis, and yet the research is strong on this subject. And, at the very least, paying attention to restoring normal physiology in depressed patients can do nothing but help recovery. Why is it that pharmacological interventions rarely seem to resolve the issue and the patient ends up in a cycle of depressives episodes that last their entire life? It's because we never focus on the physiology behind the condition. This article looks at the adrenal glands' contribution to depression and finds that this aspect is affected.

***Developmental origins of diabetes: The role of oxidative stress***
This is not the first article to look at oxidative stress/mitochondrial dysfunction as the initiating factor of insulin resistance. The basic premise is that, due to poor nutrient intake coupled w/ genetic risk factors, the mitochondria in the cell (many articles specifically look at the muscle cell) begin to function poorly and can't provide the energy needed for that cell to function properly. Hence begins the disruption of that cell's ability to respond positvely to insulin signalling.

***Paracetamol causes most liver failure in UK and US***
That bottle of Tylenol looks so innocent on the shelf, doesn't it? Ironic that Tylenol was pulled off the market for a mere week or so several yrs back when tampering was found that killed a handul of people, and yet it remains on the shelf when it is known to kill thousands more per year from untampered use. The dichotomy of our health care system is evident everywhere. A huge national uproar was raised when Tylenol was linked to several deaths from tampering, and yet barely a wimper when it kills, on a daily basis, thousands more.

***Pattern of declining blood pressure across replicate population surveys of the WHO MONICA project, mid-1980s to mid-1990s, and the role of medication***
Okay. Let me get this straight. Study after study (with millions being spent) to determine which blood pressure lowering medication is best (and it turns out to be the cheapest--the brand new "fancy dancy" BP meds are less effective and much more expensive) and, when all the cards are laid out on the table, BP meds have had very little effect on the overall drop in BP over a decade. So, insurance companies want to limit chiropractic care to 6.7 visits per year, but they'll pay indefinately for meds to lower BP when they're not shown to be effective over the long run. Sign me up for the lifestyle changes.

***Cooperative effects of isoflavones and exercise on bone and lipid metabolism in postmenopausal Japanese women***
The study strongly illustrates the brilliant orchestra that is our physiology and how, unless researchers understand this dynamic, the wrong message can make it to the public. The isoflavones in soy have been found to be protective for bone, but not in every study. As it turns out, the isoflavones in soy have to been acted on my the correct bacteria in the gut to produce equol. Equol is the compound that has consistently been found to protect bone. So, while soy may be protective to bone, this benefit may be reduced in those patients who have ever been on antibiotics or have a disturbed bacterial flora.

***Voluntary Electronic Reporting of Medical Errors and Adverse Events--An Analysis of 92,547 Reports from 26 Acute Care Hospitals***
I've always said hospitals are a dangerous place to be...Just once again proves that prevention is far better and far safer than a cure. And this is just a small sampling of what really goes on. Reports in medical journals have been iatrogenic deaths (doctor-related) at over 700,000 per year when meds and surgeries are taken into the mix. That's staggerring, and yet no public outcry. If we had a jet full of passengers going down every day (heck--even one per YEAR) there would be outrage and a demand to do something about it. Instead, we see patients continuing to flock to this type of care when safer and, in many cases, more effective treatment is available.

***Mitochondrial dysfunction and migraine: evidence and hypotheses***
Ok--so some still consider it a hypothesis. But once I get my book together (titled: Mitchondrial Dysfunction as the Root of All That is Evil in Chronic Diseases) everyone will consider it fact. This model fits very well into migraine but leaves a big gaping problem. Mitochondrial dysfunction can create a very large variety of problems (see title for future book, above...) and I have yet to have a migraine patient come into my office that has been treated w/ anything other than meds. If this model turns out to be correct, then we are grossly mismanaging our migraine patients by not addressing the problem. Rather, we are medicating to get rid of the symptoms.

***Toll-Like Receptor Triggering of a Vitamin D-Mediated Human Antimicrobial Response***
While this article is a little technical, the take home message is that vitamin D may play a strong role in defense against pathogens. The problem? Because of the induced fear of the sun (which our ancestors did not share) the levels of vitamin D deficiency in the population are nearing 75%. That's a staggerring level of deficiency for a hormone (called a vitamin, but it actually acts like a hormone) that has very important roles for our health: bone health, mental health, helping insulin do it's job, cancer prevention, and now immune support.

***European group targets overuse of antibiotics***
Well, at least somebody out there gets it, even if it has to be in Europe. But seriously, while most public health concerns focus on the development of antibiotic resistant bacteria, the true concern is the destruction of normal flora and the impact this has on our physiology. From the equol producing bacteria mentioned above to the bacteria needed from proper immune development in an infant, I feel that THIS is the real concern.
