***Cocoa Intake, Blood Pressure, and Cardiovascular Mortality***
Tea, red wine, chocolate, coffee, cocoa...all these have at one time been considered not good for us. Fortunately for us, all of these polyphenol-containing compounds have been found to be protective against a variety of chronic diseases. In this study, the authors found a whopping half the risk for CVD death with the highest cocoa users.

***Effect of Cholecalciferol Plus Calcium on Falling in Ambulatory Older Men and Women***
Wow. We are really just starting to understand the full impact that Vit D has on our health. In this study, confirming many other studies before it, the authors find that Vit D supplementation at 700 IU/day (a pretty low dose) has a 46% reduction in the number of falls. And, given that Vit D is essential to bone health, the likelihood that this same Vit D will lower the risk of fracture is great as well.

***Inflammatory Biomarkers in Acute Coronary Syndromes***
This is a wonderful review of the available markers of inflammation as they relate to the risk of heart disease. It's nice that the researchers are locked onto the idea that inflammation is a major player in CVD. Now if the clinicians at the heart institutes could just catch on..

***Prebiotics and synbiotics: two promising approaches for the treatment of atopic dermatitis in children above 2 years***
This is a great article and illustrates just how interconnected the systems of the human body are. Many other healing arts throughout the world readily accept the fact that many dermatological problems are actually problems with the GI tract. I know many dermatologists would not look to the GI tract for answers to dermatological problems, this article clearly demonstrates the link. And given the safety of this approach, it should be on the frontline of any therapy for atopic dermatitis.

***Long-term prognosis of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease: Is pharmacological therapy actually necessary?***
If anyone were to ask me, the lowly chiropractor, this same question, I would be hard pressed NOT to go into a long diatribe about the strong links between fatty liver and insulin resistance, and that lifestyle changes have been found in study after study to be safer, cheaper and more effective than pharmacological intervention...

***Dietary Energy Intake at the Age of 4 Months Predicts Postnatal Weight Gain and Childhood Body Mass Index***
Despite the incalculable number of studies supporting the superiority of breast milk, the number of moms that remain breastfeeding after 3 months is still a very small percentage. You can be sure that this all-too-soon introduction of non-mom foods is a definate contributor to our rates of chronic diseases. I strongly recommend to my patients that a newborn should be exclusively breastfed for 6 months. No grains or other solid foods in the first 6 months will give the immune system some time to develop properly.

***Effects of Decreasing Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Consumption on Body Weight in Adolescents***
Geezzz!! This definately goes into the "How much did we spend on THAT????" category. Why do we see study after study after study confirming what the average American citizen with an IQ high enough to vote already knows? TV makes kids fat. Junk food makes kids fat. Not enough exercise makes kids fat. Sugary foods makes kids fat. So, with all of this, why is there a national dilema with society throwing up there hands in ignorance of why obesity is climbing in our children??

***Assessment of the longer-term effects of a dietary portfolio of cholesterol-lowering foods in hypercholesterolemia***
Look at the conclusion of this study. Basically, the consumption of a variety of cholesterol lowering foods was just as effective as the use of statin drugs. If this is the case, they why do we still see such a huge push to medicate all patients with a pulse and a cholesterol level a hair over 200 mg/dl? I think part of the problem is that doctors don't feel the patients will comply with a healthier diet. Personally, I don't think any physician has a right to decide for a patient, but that doctor better damn well given the patient their options available so the patient can make the decision themselves.

***Growth, bone mass, and vitamin D status of Chinese adolescent girls 3 years after withdrawal of milk supplementation***
Chalk up another story debunking the "Nation's greatest marketing success story" played out by the dairy industry. In this study, milk intake had no effect on the bone health of adolescents 3 yrs later. Guess they're going to have to change their marketing ploy...

***Mumps Outbreak at a Summer Camp***
Ok. 96% vaccination coverage and we still get an "outbreak." While I understand the mumps, in a small percentage of patients, can be serious, there are times we need to step back and evaluate our thirst for vaccination. In this case, the mumps vaccine did little to protect the people at this summer camp. So, a procedure that has potential serious ramifications (as evidenced by Dr. Wakefield's work on MMR vaccination and autism) and is forced onto a population in the name of public health, may actually do little to truly protect those it is given to. Just how screwed up is that?
