***Flaxseed Oil Increases the Plasma Concentrations of Cardioprotective (n-3) Fatty Acids in Humans***
There has been some controversy about the ability of alpha linolenic acid in flaxseed getting converted in humans to EPA and DHA. I have personally moved to a broad spectrum essential fatty acid supplement that I recommend. This study confirms that conversion to EPA is good, but flaxseed does not convert over to DHA. This being said, if a patient is willing to grind up flaxseeds daily and use the whole product, I am a strong supporter of this approach, because there are other compounds like lignans that will be present in addition to the fatty acids that are very good for our health.

***Early Programming of Body Composition and Fat Distribution in Adolescents***
Wow. Are we in trouble as a society. Basically, low birth weight infants leaves them predisposed to central obesity in boys and low bone mass and lean body mass in girls. As I've said before, we have unhealthy moms giving birth to unhealthy infants, and then continuing to feed them with the bad habits that made the moms unhealthy in the first place. Man is THAT a disaster waiting to happen to our society. And consider this--the increased use of assisted reproduction in many cases indicates that the mom was not healthy enough to conceive in the first place. Instead of fixing the problem, we force a body that's not ready to reproduce to reproduce and many of these infants are premature, perputating the cycle.

***Excessive Weight Gain during Pregnancy Is Associated with Earlier Termination of Breast-Feeding among White Women***
I REALLY, REALLY wish I was making this stuff up. I don't necessarily blame any individual patient, but I do strongly blame society, the medical establishment and our national organizations. The answer is so simple, and yet remains a big secret. National debates on how to manage the obesity "epidemic," talk about mandatory reporting of HbA1c levels in New York. All this could end with some real information on health. Exercise more. Avoid refined carbs. Eat healthier fats. It's that simple for the vast majority.

***Dietary Saturated Fat Intake Is Inversely Associated with Bone Density in Humans***
I have a dream. One day the Dairy industry will have a national meeting with the American Beef Council and they will release a consensus statement that osteoporosis has nothing to do with dairy intake and that poor quality fats leading to increased inflammation is the key factor in lowering bone mass. Did I say dreaming? I think it's just paint fumes...

***Unmetabolized Folic Acid in Plasma Is Associated with Reduced Natural Killer Cell Cytotoxicity among Postmenopausal Women***
Given that I am a big fan of folic acid supplementation, articles like this do cause me to slow down an re-evaluate what I'm doing. A few things to consider. Some supplements do use the form 5-tetrahydrofolate, which is the converted form, which is not a bad idea. However, you can run into problems when a patient is loaded up on folic acid (such as with food fortification) but not given adequate levels of B12 to go with it. These two, along with betaine and B6, run in the same circles. So, if one is going to consider supplementation of folic acid, there needs to be an adequete level of B12 given. This is NOT found in pharmaceutical prenatals, which have very low levels of B12.

***Use of Gastric Acid Suppressive Agents and the Risk of Community-Acquired Clostridium difficile Associated Disease***
Let's first say that C. difficile is not something you want to suffer through. The authors of this paper seemed a little surprised to find an almost tripling of the risk of acquiring this infection in patient on acid suppressive drugs. Well, given that we are constantly exposed to an enormous amount of bacteria in our daily lives, and given that stomach acid acts as a very strong barrier to these bacteria, suppression of this protection will of course open up yet another Pandora's box of health problems with acid suppression. Ah heck. What was Mother Nature thinking anyway? We don't need stomach acid for health.

***Physicians' Initial Management of Acute Low Back Pain Versus Evidence-Based Guidelines***
This is one of those articles that, as a chiropractor, really gets to me. We are frequently called quacks and non-evidence based. Unfortunately, it appears that no one has the ability to throw any stones. However, given that many studies have now shown that chiropractic care is a more cost effective approach, we can begin to see why. I know I have patients come into my office with a simple case of LBP that's pretty clear cut, and yet they have X-rays and MRI in tow when they come in. Talk about expensive care!!!

***The efficacy of ginger for the prevention of postoperative nausea and vomiting: A meta-analysis***
Ginger is one of those knee-jerk natural compounds that I always think of first when it comes to nausea. This review of 5 separate studies found ginger very effective at reducing post surgical nausea and vomiting. Given the high safety level and low cost, this one makes ginger a no-brainer for first line of defense in many cases of nausea.

***Riboflavin Lowers Homocysteine in Individuals Homozygous for the MTHFR 677C to T Polymorphism***
This is a perfect example of a problem with medicine and research today. Awhile back there was some debate over whether checking homocysteine added any predictive value to determining CVD risk and whether the addition of B12 and folic acid could lower risk of heart disease and stroke. Many said the effect was not strong enough to warrant the "hassle." Now we see that riboflavin also plays a large role in this pathway, and in patients with the MTHFR genotype that had low riboflavin levels to start with, the reduction in homocysteine levels was a high as 40%. So, any studies that did not find a strong effect of B12 and folic acid for lowering CVD risk now needs to go back to their data and see if the addition of riboflavin would've affected the results.

***Maternal vitamin D status during pregnancy and childhood bone mass at age 9 years***
A whopping 49% of the pregnant women in this study did not have an adequate Vit D status, and this was found to lead to lowered bone mass in the children at 9 yrs of age. I really do believe that we are beginning to see the devastation that our fear-mongering of the sun has created. Increased colon, breast, prostate cancer, worsening insulin resistance, autoimmune conditions like MS and now bone health in kids. What a tangled weave our health really is.
